The tankini solves a problem that neither the one-piece nor the bikini addresses: the customer wants midriff coverage but does not want to remove an entire garment for a toilet trip. It is a quietly dominant category in the 35+ demographic and in plus-size ranges, where it consistently outsells both bikinis and one-pieces. For brands, the tankini carries one-piece pricing with two-piece flexibility, and its customer buys with far less price sensitivity than the bikini market.

Styles We Manufacture

Classic tankini tops with a straight hem falling at the hip, paired with full-coverage briefs. Longline tankinis that extend past the hip for maximum coverage. Ruched-side tops that create a flattering vertical drape across the midsection. Empire-waist tops with a defined underbust seam. Halter and cross-back strap configurations for better bust support. Flowy babydoll and swing tops for a looser fit. Bottoms pair as classic briefs, high-waisted briefs, boy-shorts, or matching swim skirts. Any top pairs with any bottom, which lets you sell separates and serve customers who size differently top and bottom.

Fabric Options

Recycled stretch knit is our standard base — GRS certified, with the recovery needed to hold shape across a longer garment panel. Nylon spandex 80/20 delivers a softer hand for premium positioning. Fabric weight matters more in tankinis than in bikinis: a lightweight knit will cling to and highlight the midsection, defeating the entire purpose of the garment. We specify a mid-to-heavy weight in the 200-220 gsm range for tankini tops, often with a full front lining that smooths rather than reveals. Power mesh is used internally for bust support and optional tummy control panels.

Construction & Craftsmanship Details

The defining construction challenge is hem behaviour. A tankini top that rides up in water is worthless, so we cut the hem with adequate width and finish it with a coverstitch or a lightly weighted binding that keeps it sitting down. Bust support is built with a shelf bra and removable cups in a stitched pocket, or underwire channelling for cup-sized ranges. Ruching is inserted with elastic shirring during sewing so the gather stays even after repeated wear. Straps are bar-tacked at both ends and are wider than bikini straps to carry the additional garment weight. FOE binding finishes the neckline and armholes. Where a tummy control panel is specified, it is a separate power-mesh layer anchored at the side seams rather than a simple double layer.

Customization & Branding

The tankini top is one of the largest uninterrupted print surfaces in swimwear, which makes it excellent for placement graphics and engineered prints that would be lost on a bikini. Solid tops with printed bottoms, or vice versa, are a cost-efficient way to build multiple SKUs from one print run. Custom Pantone matching is standard with lab dips. Branding uses woven labels at the center back neck, heat-transfer tagless labels, silicone patches, and custom hangtags. Because this customer skews slightly older, packaging that communicates quality — tissue wrap, printed boxes — measurably supports the price point.

Sizing & Fit Development

Grading runs XS-3XL with extended plus-size grading to 5XL available. This category over-indexes heavily in larger sizes, and proper re-drafting rather than proportional scaling is essential — bust-to-waist and waist-to-hip ratios shift substantially across the range, and a scaled pattern produces a top that fits at the bust but pulls at the hip. Torso length is the second critical dimension and varies by market. We strongly recommend fit samples in both a core size and a size 2XL or above before bulk approval, since the fit problems that matter in this category only appear at the larger end.

Packaging & Shipping

Sets pack as matched pairs in a single poly bag with hangtag, or as separates with individual barcodes if you sell tops and bottoms independently. Separates selling is particularly valuable in this category given how often customers need different sizes top and bottom. Mixed size ratios per carton are included at no extra cost. All freight modes available with full export documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a tankini over a one-piece?

Two-piece convenience with one-piece coverage. The customer gets midriff coverage without removing the entire garment, and can buy different sizes top and bottom.

How do you stop the top riding up in water?

Adequate hem width plus a coverstitched or lightly weighted binding. We also specify mid-to-heavy weight fabric, since lightweight knits float and cling.

Do you offer plus sizes?

Yes — standard grading to 3XL and extended grading to 5XL. We re-draft across the range rather than scaling, because bust-to-waist ratios shift significantly.

Can tops and bottoms be sold separately?

Yes, and we recommend it for this category. Separates packing with individual barcodes is available, since size mismatch between top and bottom is very common here.

Is tummy control available?

Yes. A dedicated power-mesh control panel anchored at the side seams, which performs far better than a simple double fabric layer.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

50 complete sets per style per color, produced in 15-20 days.

Factory-direct pricing, sampling in 7–10 days, and photo updates at every production stage.
